Answering Tough Interview Questions: What is the first thing you would do if hired? By Tom Halligan
You are interviewing for your dream job. You got this. And then they ask this loaded question: “Describe the first three things you would do if you were hired for this position.”
The interviewer is likely looking for a multi-dimensional answer that relates to a few things:
(1) Add immediate value
(2) Make someone else’s job easier
(3) Save or make the company money.
Here are some ways to rock this answer every time!
- Add Immediate Value
Job interviewers want to know what unique value you would bring. Talk about a business challenge they have shared and how you have handled similar situations. Show them how you add immediate value!
- Make Someone Else’s Job Easier
Some interviewers are also looking for someone to help lighten their workload. Explain how you will need little to no training or how you could help with tasks or projects beyond the core focus of the position. Convince the interviewer they can’t live without you on board!
- Save or Make Money for the Company
Talk about a specific action you would take to help the company reduce expenses or increase revenue. For example, as a project manager, explain how you’d review projected expenses and reduce costs. Or for a sales role, how would you generate revenue from an unexplored market or customer base?
The most important thing is to clearly convey that they would gain by hiring you, and what they would absolutely lose by not hiring you!
